We’re pleased to share that planning permission has been granted for the sensitive conversion of Carlingcott Church, a Grade II listed building in Somerset, from F1 (non-residential institution) use to C3 (residential) use.

This landmark project, led by CSH Architectural Services, showcases our commitment to delivering thoughtful, heritage-led design that balances the needs of modern living with the protection of historic fabric.
A Sensitive Approach to a Historic Building
Carlingcott Church is a striking example of 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture, recognised for its historical and architectural importance through its Grade II listing. Like many churches no longer in active use, it faced an uncertain future — until now.
Our design approach focused on ensuring the building remains a valued and viable part of the local landscape. Working closely with conservation officers, our team developed a proposal that retains the building’s external character and internal features, while allowing for a high-quality, sustainable residential conversion.
From F1 to C3: Making the Case for Change
Changing the use class of a listed building is never straightforward — but with detailed heritage assessments, carefully considered plans, and a robust planning case, we were able to demonstrate that the change would secure the long-term preservation and use of the building, without compromising its significance.
We’re particularly proud that the scheme was praised by Bath & North East Somerset Council for its respect for heritage, restrained intervention, and its alignment with both local and national planning policy.
What Happens Next?
With planning permission now secured, the project will progress to the technical and construction phases. Our team will continue to be involved throughout, supporting the discharge of conditions and ensuring the original vision is delivered with the same care and attention to detail that has defined the planning process.
